Call 112 in case of emergency

Call 112 in the event of serious illness, an accident or a life-threatening situation.

When you call 112, you may be asked:

• who you are
• what has happened and who is injured
• where and when it happened, including the exact location
• which phone number you are calling from

Out-of-hours medical service

If you need medical help outside your own doctor’s opening hours, contact the Danish out-of-hours medical service, lægevagten. It is normally available from 16:00 to 08:00 on weekdays and throughout weekends and public holidays.

Contact lægevagten if:

• you suddenly become ill
• your condition cannot wait until your own doctor opens
• an existing condition suddenly gets worse
• you have a minor injury

Always contact lægevagten before going to a hospital for urgent medical care.

In the Capital Region, call 1813

If you are in Copenhagen or elsewhere in the Capital Region of Denmark, call lægevagten on 1813 if you need urgent medical help outside your doctor’s opening hours. The service is staffed by doctors and nurses who will assess your needs and advise you on what to do next.

Accident and emergency departments

If you have an acute injury or suddenly become ill, you may need treatment at a hospital accident and emergency department, akutmodtagelse.

Contact your doctor during opening hours or the out-of-hours medical service before going to an accident and emergency department. In the Capital Region of Denmark, call 1813 outside your doctor’s opening hours.

Doctor in Denmark or health centre in Sweden

If you live in Sweden and work in Denmark, you can see a GP in Denmark even if you do not have your own Danish GP. The consultation is free of charge.

You can choose a GP who is accepting new patients. Information about GPs who are currently accepting new patients is available online.

If you prefer to receive non-urgent or ongoing healthcare in Sweden, you can contact your usual Swedish health centre, vårdcentral.

Healthcare when visiting Denmark

If you live in Sweden and are visiting Denmark, you are entitled to medically necessary public healthcare during your stay. This includes treatment that cannot wait until you return to Sweden.

If you live in Sweden, you can show proof of residence and valid ID to document your right to healthcare in Denmark. If you need follow-up treatment after returning to Sweden, contact your usual Swedish vårdcentral.
