Dental care when you work in Denmark
If you live in Sweden and work in Denmark, you can receive subsidised dental care in both countries. Find out what you pay in Denmark and what you need to do before visiting a dentist in Sweden.
Dental costs and subsidies in Denmark
If you are covered by social security in Denmark and have the Danish special health insurance card, det særlige sundhedskort, you are entitled to subsidised dental care in Denmark.
You can choose any dentist approved by the Danish regions and can change dentist depending on the treatment you need.
If you are over 18, you pay for dental examinations and treatment, but you receive a public subsidy towards certain treatments. You pay the part of the cost that is not covered by the subsidy.
If your share of the treatment cost exceeds DKK 2,500 after the public subsidy has been deducted, the dentist must offer you a written price estimate.
Emergency dental care in Denmark
If you need emergency dental care outside normal opening hours, for example because of toothache or an injury, you can contact an emergency dentist. Emergency dental care is available at designated dental clinics or through hospital emergency services.
If you are a cross-border commuter covered by social security in Denmark, you are entitled to the same public subsidies as people living in Denmark.
Dental care in Sweden when you work in Denmark
If you live in Sweden but are covered by social security in Denmark, you are also entitled to subsidised dental care in Sweden.
Before visiting a dentist in Sweden, you need a certificate from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency, Försäkringskassan, confirming your right to healthcare in Sweden. You also need to be registered with Försäkringskassan.
The certificate is called Intyg om rätt till vårdförmåner i Sverige för personer bosatta i Sverige men försäkrade i ett annat EU/EES-land eller Schweiz. You can apply using form FK 5435 or through Mina sidor at Försäkringskassan.
Your application should include:
- a copy of your employment contract
- your latest payslip
- your employer’s contact details
Remember to include your Swedish personal identity number, personnummer or samordningsnummer, on all documents you submit.
