ATP pension when working in Denmark
If you work in Denmark, you usually contribute to ATP pension through your salary. Find out how ATP contributions work, when your pension is paid and what you need to do if you live in Sweden.
How ATP pension contributions work
In addition to the Danish state pension, you may receive ATP pension if you have worked in Denmark.
If you are aged 16 or over and work at least 9 hours per week in Denmark, you pay ATP contributions from your salary. Your employer also pays contributions to ATP. This applies even if you live in Sweden.
Keep ATP updated with your address in Sweden
Around 3 months before you reach retirement age, ATP will send you a letter stating how much you will receive and whether your pension will be paid monthly or as a lump sum.
Make sure ATP has your current address. If you move, you need to inform ATP of your new address, as ATP is not automatically notified of address changes outside Denmark.

ATP pension payments
You can start receiving ATP Livslang Pension when you reach the Danish state pension age. You can also choose to defer payments for up to 10 years after your state pension age. The longer you defer your pension, the higher your payments will be.
The amount you receive depends on how much has been paid into ATP over the years.
How your ATP pension is paid
The amount of your pension determines how it is paid:
- if your pension is more than 3,600 DKK per year before tax (2026), it is paid monthly
- if your pension is 3,600 DKK or less per year before tax (2026), it is paid as a lump sum
Payments to a Swedish bank account
Your ATP pension can be paid into either a Danish or Swedish bank account. You will have to pay a fee if your pension is paid into a foreign bank account.
To receive your pension in a Swedish bank account, you need to provide ATP with your bank details.
