Inform the Swedish Pensions Agency

If you live in Sweden, inform the Swedish Pensions Agency, Pensionsmyndigheten, that you have earned Danish state pension, folkepension. Pensionsmyndigheten will then contact the Danish authority responsible for pension payments, Udbetaling Danmark, which pays Danish folkepension and ATP to people living in Sweden.

Tax on Danish pensions in Denmark and Sweden

If you live in Sweden and receive pension income from Denmark, the general rule is that your pension is taxed in both Denmark and Sweden. Double taxation is avoided by giving you credit for the Danish tax you have paid, up to a maximum amount corresponding to the part of your total Swedish tax attributable to your Danish income.

However, some types of Danish pension are not taxable in Sweden. These include:

  • Danish pensions under section 53A

  • Pension savings secured through a life insurance policy taken out before 1997

  • Payments from a private pension savings scheme with a Danish bank or credit institution

Danish public pension is exempt from tax in Sweden if you were resident in Sweden on 4 April 2008, received this type of pension from another Nordic country on that date and have remained continuously resident in Sweden since then.

You must be able to provide documentation showing that your pension is exempt from tax in Sweden. Keep your pension agreements and other relevant documents. If you no longer have them, you can try to obtain copies from your pension fund or pension provider.

Even if your Danish pension is not taxable in Sweden, you must still include it in your Swedish tax return. Tick the Pension box and state the country and amount under section 17, Other information.
