If you are registered as a resident in Sweden

If you live in Sweden and work in Denmark, you can drive your Swedish-registered vehicle in Denmark.

However, you may only drive your Swedish-registered vehicle in Denmark if you spend no more than 185 nights in Denmark during a 12-month period. You must also be able to document both:

  • your residence in Sweden
  • the reason for your stay in Denmark, for example an employment contract

Failure to comply with these rules may result in a fine.

If you are staying temporarily in Denmark

If you stay in Denmark for more than 185 days during a 12-month period, you may, in certain situations, apply to pay a quarterly fee instead of registering your vehicle in Denmark.

This may apply, for example, if you are:

  • studying in Denmark
  • working in Denmark for a fixed period

If you are registered as a resident in Denmark

As a general rule, you cannot drive a foreign-registered vehicle if you are resident in Denmark.

In some situations, for example while importing a vehicle, you may be granted temporary permission. You must notify the Danish Motor Vehicle Agency before crossing the border.

Remember that an imported vehicle must be registered in Denmark within 30 days.

If you drive a Swedish company vehicle

If you drive a Swedish-registered company vehicle in Denmark, you may do so for up to 183 days during a 12-month period.

Before using the vehicle in Denmark, you must apply to the Danish Motor Vehicle Agency for an exemption from Danish vehicle registration tax.

The exemption only applies to the person named in the permit or a member of that person's household. The permit must be kept in the vehicle and presented if requested by the police or the Danish Motor Vehicle Agency, Motorstyrelsen.

If the vehicle is used in Denmark for 183 days or more during a 12-month period, it must be registered in Denmark.

Commuting between Denmark and Sweden

If you live in Denmark and commute to work in Sweden in a Swedish-registered vehicle, you must apply for permission to drive the vehicle between the border and your registered address in Denmark.
