Border control when entering Denmark
Temporary border checks may be carried out when entering Denmark from Sweden. Find out which ID documents you need and what to expect if you travel by train, car, bus or ferry.
ID requirements when entering Denmark
The Danish authorities may introduce temporary border checks when entering Denmark from Sweden.
If border checks are in place, you must be able to present valid identification.
A valid ID document must include:
- your photograph
- your full name
- your personal identity number or date of birth
- your signature
- the document number
- the period of validity
- the issuing authority
Below you can see which ID documents are accepted and what the rules are for different types of travel.
If you are a Danish citizen or a citizen of another Nordic country, you can use:
- a valid passport
- a valid driving licence issued in a Nordic country
- a valid national identity card
A Nordic driving licence is usually sufficient. However, we recommend carrying a passport or national ID card if you have one.
Please note that ID cards issued by banks or tax authorities are not accepted as national identity cards because they do not show the holder's nationality.
You can use:

You must carry:

Depending on your nationality, you may also need other travel documents, such as a visa or a residence permit valid for the Schengen area.
The same ID requirements apply to children travelling without a parent or legal guardian.
If a child travels with a parent or legal guardian, they do not need their own travel documents, provided the parent or guardian can confirm their relationship to the child.
Different situations at the border
If you travel by train from Sweden to Denmark, you must be able to present valid identification if the Danish authorities carry out temporary border checks.
Border checks are carried out on board the train and normally do not affect the train schedule.
If you travel by car across the Øresund Bridge, you must be able to present valid identification if temporary border checks are in place.
The police may also carry out a search of your vehicle.
If you travel by ferry between Helsingborg and Helsingør, or by bus between Sweden and Denmark, you must be able to present valid identification if temporary border checks are in place.
Border control when entering Sweden
If you travel from Denmark to Sweden, you must also be able to present valid identification when entering Sweden, as the Swedish Police carry out random border checks.
