CPR number or tax number?

A CPR number is the Danish personal identification number, similar to the Swedish personal identity number. It is used when you deal with Danish authorities and is also required by many private companies.

If you plan to move to Denmark and stay for more than 3 months, you must apply for a Danish CPR number. If you live in Sweden and only work in Denmark, a Danish personal tax number is usually sufficient.

If you live in Sweden and work in Denmark

If you live in Sweden and commute to work in Denmark, you will usually need a Danish personal tax number rather than a CPR number.

Once you have signed an employment contract with your Danish employer, you must apply for:

  • a Danish personal tax number
  • a forskudsopgørelse, preliminary income assessment
  • an eTax card, eSkattekort

You need your Danish personal tax number to open a Danish bank account, which many employers require to pay your salary.

If you cannot apply online

If you cannot apply online, you can complete form 04.063 EN/DK and submit it electronically through skat.dk or by post. The postal address is included on the form.

To submit the form electronically:

  • Select English.
  • Go to Contact > Other queries.
  • Select Alternatively, send an email > Without logging on.
  • Select Individuals > Tax registration upon arrival in Denmark.
  • Select Working temporarily in Denmark (form 04.063) and attach the completed form.

Documents you need to attach

Whether you apply online or use form 04.063 EN/DK, you must attach:

  • a copy of your signed employment contract

  • a copy of your passport (photo page) or national identity card

  • a copy of your Swedish personal identity certificate or, if you are married, a family certificate and, if applicable, a marriage certificate, issued by Skatteverket

Driving licences, identity cards issued by Skatteverket and bank cards are not accepted as proof of identity.

If you are not a citizen of a Nordic country, an EU country or Switzerland, you must also attach a copy of your Danish work permit.

Processing time

Skattestyrelsen cannot issue your Danish personal tax number earlier than 21 days before your first working day.

Processing times vary, so you should expect to wait several weeks. Your Danish personal tax number and forskudsopgørelse (preliminary income assessment) will be sent to you by post.

If you move to Denmark

If you move to Denmark, you must apply for a CPR number.

You can apply through International Citizen Service (ICS) or at the Citizen Service centre in the municipality where you will live. To obtain a CPR number, you must have a permanent address in Denmark.

If you are a Nordic citizen, you will normally be deregistered in your previous country of residence when you register in Denmark.
